(KNOX) – The Grand Forks Police Department conducted alcohol and tobacco compliance checks with the assistance of area youths this week. A total of 12 businesses were checked for tobacco and 8 for alcohol. All business passed the tobacco checks. Two failed the alcohol checks.
The business checked for tobacco were Petro Serve, 1st Avenue and North 5th Street, Denny’s, Circle K, South Washington, Street, Orton’s, Hugo’s Wine and Spirits, 32nd Avenue South, Happy Harry’s South, Grand Forks Smoke Shop, Northdale Oil, Loaf N Jug, University, Simonson’s, Gateway Drive, Ely’s Ivy, Downtown, Johnny’s, Rite Spot, Washington Street, Applebee’s, Texas Roadhouse and Long Haul Saloon.
Sam’s Liquor and Speedway did not pass the alcohol checks.
The Grand Forks Police Department conducts several compliance checks each year for alcohol and tobacco.
The Grand Forks Police Department uses youth from the community who are under 21 years of age. The compliance checks are conducted by having a youth enter an establishment, under the supervision of a police officer and in accordance with Grand Forks City Ordinance. The underage youth will attempt to purchase alcohol or tobacco and will in no way attempt to conceal their age. They provide their actual ID and if asked they say their actual age. If a sale is refused, the business “passes” the check. If a sale is completed, it is observed by the officer, and appropriate enforcement action is a sale is completed, it is observed by the officer, and appropriate enforcement action is taken.
