(KNOX) – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will not run for a third term.

Walz said that he wants to focus on combating fraud in state programs rather than campaigning.

The Democratic governor had announced plans in September to seek a historic third term. He said he can’t give a political campaign his full attention while dealing with what he calls a fraud crisis.

Walz said that organized criminals have exploited Minnesota’s state programs. His administration has fired employees, worked with federal prosecutors and cut funding streams where it found widespread criminal activity.

Walz said he’s confident a Democrat will win the governor’s race in November. He’ll remain in office through January 2027.

The two-term governor was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2024.
