(By Mike Moen. Minnesota News Connection) – Public schools not only help shape the minds of students, they also play a role in keeping them physically fit.

For smaller districts, where resources are a challenge, there are hopeful signs rural schools can secure adequate spaces and equipment. Declining student enrollment amid lower birth rates and rising operating costs are among the obstacles Minnesota schools are contending with these days, no matter their size.

Jessica Lundgren, senior development director in Minnesota and North Dakota for the American Heart Association, said such hurdles can be pronounced in areas with a small student population. She stressed it is important they have gyms and playgrounds in good enough shape, not just new fields for afterschool sports.

“Not every family can afford sports,” Lundgren pointed out. “Not every family has the transportation, especially in rural communities, where you’re co-opted with other smaller schools and practice may not be in your town.”
