(KNOX) – The North Dakota State Fire Marshal’s Office is calling on long-term care providers, families, and caregivers to double down on oxygen safety after a devastating fire at a Massachusetts assisted living facility killed 10 residents earlier this month.
North Dakota has more than 70 licensed nursing homes and over 80 assisted living facilities, many with residents who use oxygen.
Key safety steps when oxygen is in use:
–No smoking, ever. Sparks from cigarettes, cigars, or pipes can ignite clothing, bedding, or furniture instantly.
–Keep oxygen at least 5–10 feet from flames or heat sources.
–Use only approved equipment. Do not modify tubing, connectors, or flow meters.
–Store oxygen cylinders securely, upright, and away from heat sources and clutter.
–Post “Oxygen in Use – No Smoking” signs. Alert visitors and caregivers immediately upon entering the home or room.
–Confirm TFOs are installed and understood.
