(KNOX) – West Nile virus has been identified in a group of mosquitoes collected in Grand Forks.

That’s according to the Grand Forks mosquito control program.

Although positive test rates for the virus remain low, residents are encouraged to take extra precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. There have been no cases identified among humans.

The mosquito most likely to transmit the virus is the culex tarsalis mosquito, which is most active after sunset. Limiting activity between dawn and dusk, using insect repellent with DEET, wearing long sleeves and long pants, and eliminating standing water are some of the protective measures recommended.

West Nile virus is generally transmitted by mosquitoes. Many people bitten by a virus-carrying bug don’t develop symptoms, while some may have mild symptoms like fever, headache, body aches, skin rashes and swollen lymph nodes. In less than 1% of infected people, the virus can cause inflammation of the brain, which can be fatal. Those with concerns should contact their health care provider.
