Produced Water Spill Reported to The State

(KNOX) -XTO Energy recently notified the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ) of a produced water spill caused when a backhoe struck a pipeline in Williams County. The incident occurred about 15 miles south of Tioga.

XTO Energy estimates that approximately 400 barrels (16,800 gallons) of produced water were released, impacting surrounding range land. Produced water is a by-product of oil and gas development.

Personnel from the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality have inspected the site and will continue to monitor the investigation and remediation.

Federal and state laws require that operators report the spillage of any materials that may pollute water, air or soil. Visit spill.nd.gov for more information about North Dakota’s Unified Spill Reporting System notifications and the public access tool.
