(KNOX) – Wahpeton driver David Comings earned three titles including that of Grand Champion at the North Dakota Motor Carriers Association’s annual Truck Driving Championship and Safety Expo at the Fargo Holiday Inn.

“The top accident-free drivers in North Dakota gather every year to vie for a championship in nine individual classes. The competition tests their abilities on and off the road,” North Dakota Motor Carriers Association Administrator Kacey Heidrich said. “Thank you to all who competed and congratulations to those winning.”

Comings captured his fourth state championship in four years – and second straight five-axle title – was part of the team champion FedEx team and took home Grand Champion for the first time.

Drivers were tested on their driving expertise, inspection skills, overall knowledge and professionalism. Drivers took a written examination and pre-trip inspection test and went through a live skills test. The skills course tested drivers’ ability to judge distances, maneuver tight spaces, reverse, park and position their vehicle exactly over scales, before barriers or around curves.
