(KNOX) – State Senate Bill 2376, which would have allowed the Turtle Mountain Band of the Chippewa to build a casino resort in Grand Forks County was voted down in the North Dakota Senate.

State Senator Scott Meyer of Grand Forks made a plea before the vote.

“You need buy in on so many levels. We aren’t even there yet, we got to get to D.C. There is a lot of work going on. I just wanted to make sure I addressed those points,” Meyer said on the North Dakota Senate floor.

The Turtle Mountain Band of the Chippewa had wanted to build a hotel, casino and resort on land that they owned in Grand Forks County.

It has the support of the city of Grand Forks.

The land that tribe owns is wet of Interstate 29. The City of Grand Forks has said that they would annex the land and provide services. But the legislature needed to act to allow it to be part of the gaming compact.

The vote on SB 2376 was 15 yes, 29 no.
