(KNOX) – As Grand Forks grows to the south and developments are built in that area, flooding is a concern.

Grand Forks City Assistant Engineer Christian Danielson says more flooding is occurring in that part of town.

“The south end drain way, what we call Perimeter Drainage Area 4. It’s roughly bounded by the interstate, the river, 40th Avenue South and Merrifield Road,” Danielson says.

The Grand Forks Engineering Department says that flood protection in that area will be through storage ponds as developments go into that part of town.

“The most economical way to do this is with storage. We looked at several other alternatives, but storage is just realty the most economical way to do this,” Danielson says.

During the spring 2022 flood event, it was observed that water levels were rising much higher than expected based on previously completed studies.
