Grand Forks School Board discusses dilemma with contract negotiations

(KNOX) – Close to six dozen educators overflowed Monday night’s meeting of the Grand Forks School Board.

Grand Forks Education, Principals and Directors Associations protested a legal definition of “teacher” made outside of contract negotitations. Melissa Boukup spoke on behalf of GFEA.

“It is a real concern that this potential move will force this next round of negotiations into a hostile and adverserial tone.  Many of our certified staff feel attacked and feel that the board will do everything in their power to not follow our teacher-negotiated agreement.”

The Grand Forks School Board went into exeuctive session for 54 minutes, then moved to accept petitions from all three negotiating associations, with one exception from board member Sherri Houdek.

“I believe that GFEA has to be engaged and involved with all of those people so that they do not feel left out.”

The board later moved unanimously to approve a Joint Powers Agreement between school districts in Grand Forks and Grand Forks Air Force Base.
