(Mary Steurer – North Dakota Monitor) – The North Dakota House of Representatives voted 73-18 to prevent K-12 public schools from having all-gender bathrooms, including those that are single occupancy.

The bill would also task the Attorney General’s Office with investigating schools that don’t comply with the law.

House Bill 1144  follows up on a law adopted in 2023 that, among other things, prevents transgender students from using bathrooms and locker rooms that align with their gender.

The bill also states that male and female restrooms can’t share a communal sink or entry area.

It adds language allowing parents to submit complaints to the Attorney General’s Office if they believe their school is not following the law.

Courts could fine schools found in non-compliance up to $2,500 per violation.
