(KNOX) – Grand Forks City Council approved the Dr. Sheridan, UND Maize Research Farm lease.

Dr. William Sheridan, a UND biology professor, is in charge of the research program.

Grand Forks Planning & Community Development Director Ryan Brooks says the city saves some money when it is leased to the research farm.

“It does save us from having to mow that area to where he is at. So we’re are getting some return in not having to pay for at least that,” says Brooks.

Brooks says the Dr. Sheridan, UND Maize Research Farm began in the area of the Ralph Engelstad Arena.

“Once he was forced out of that site he went searching for some new sites. I think he may have had an interim site, and then he landed on our land. He needs water close and those type of things,” Brooks says

In 2007 the City of Grand Forks entered into a farm lease agreement with the University of North Dakota for the purpose of establishing a Maize research field located on city owned property at 1940 N. 36th Street.

Since 2007 the city and UND have continued to work together to keep the research field in operation.

According to the City of Grand Forks, Dr. Sheridan has been a steward of the city’s land and has been very cooperative with the city regarding the multiple changes to the area surrounding the research field.

The current lease is due to expire on December 31 of this year. Dr. Sheridan and UND will continue leasing the land from the city for another five-year period.
