(KNOX) – Ice conditions in Polk County, Minnesota are highly variable, with some lakes still open and ice depths ranging from zero to four inches.
The Minnesota DNR recommends the following guidelines for safe ice thickness:
• Under 4 inches: Stay off
• 4 inches: Stay off for ice fishing or walking
• 5-to-7 inches: Stay off for snowmobiling or small ATVs
• 7-to-8 inches: Stay off for side-by-side ATVs
• 9-to-10 inches: Stay off for small cars or SUVs
The Ice Report app can also provide information about ice thickness on lakes in northern climates.
The ice fishing season in Minnesota for lakes within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area is open now and lasts until the end of March.
