(KNOX) – An extension for the letter of intent for a plan was granted by the Grand Forks City Council.
“Northern Plains Nitrogen, which is a project that we’ve worked on for over a decade. Every six months, generally over that several years, I’ve been in front to ask to extend this for another six months,” Grand Forks City Administrator Todd Feland told the Grand Forks Committee of the Whole.
Northern Plains Nitrogen COO, Larry Mackie, also made his case to the committee.
“We have interest from the state. Last week received an email asking for us to update the state on the status of the project, how they can help us,” Mackie told the committee.
The estimated $3 billion plus Northern Plains Nitrogen project has become more economically viable and sustainable due to long-term access to low-cost and uninterrupted natural gas supply; the highest priced nitrogen fertilizer market in the USA – the regional market is underserved and reliant on imported fertilizer; growing regional com belt, and competitive and supportive state and local communities and governments.
The Norther Plains Nitrogen products will be considered low, or using the latest proven and efficient technology to include carbon capture and utilization.
The extension is related to industrial water supply and discharge permitting.
Until a successful financial close is more imminent, the staff of the City of Grand Forks has paused regarding moving forward with a final draft development agreement on serving Northern Plains Nitrogen related to such matters as infrastructure development, design requirements, and health and safety considerations.
