(KNOX) – HANKINSON, N.D. – The Catholic Diocese of Fargo says that while damage is extensive, St. Phillip’s Catholic Church in Hankinson can likely be saved.
A fire that appears to have started in the attic of the historic church did heavy damage. There was also smoke and water damage throughout the church.
A spokesman says two members of the congregation entered the building shortly after the blaze was reported and removed the Blessed Sacrament and other articles and vestments before they were told to leave the church over concerns about their safety.
Bishop John Folda has toured the damaged portions of the church. A remodeling project was underway when the fire broke out. Neither a cause nor damage estimate has not been determined. The state fire marshal’s office is investigating.
