(KNOX) – The Grand Forks Fire Department responded to 515 N. 8th Street for a report of smoke in multiple apartments Tuesday.

Fire crews arrived on the scene and found smoke in units on the first and second floors of the building, with 4 out of the 8 units affected.

Further investigation revealed that a fire had occurred in the ceiling of a first-floor apartment and is believed to have self-extinguished thanks to a broken water line.

All occupants of the affected apartments were evacuated upon fire department arrival.

Damage was contained to the two main-floor units. The occupants of the 2 damaged units were unable to reoccupy their units, but all other tenants were allowed to return.

American Red Cross has arranged temporary housing for those affected.
The cause of this fire was determined to be accidental due to a malfunctioning bathroom fan.

The Grand Forks Fire Department responded with five engines, one truck and a command vehicle with 22 personnel. No responders or occupants were injured during the incident.

The fire department was assisted by Altru, Grand Forks Police Department, and the American Red Cross.
