(KNOX) -The Grand Forks Planning and Zoning Commission heard from city planner Sierra Johnson this week about street flooding in Grand Forks.

“I did present this information to the Board of Adjustments, and I talked to them about the implications of increasing impervious surface area in our residential areas that already experience a lot of street flooding during rainfall events,” Johnson said.

The Board of Zoning Adjustment has the power to grant variances in any exceptions to any of the construction provisions or codes of The City of Grand Forks.

Johnson said that her department is not proposing a code change for impervious areas.

“We’re not proposing a code change for impervious areas, but due to concerns of street flooding and storm sewer inadequacies we did discuss the implications,” she told the commission of her meeting with the Grand Forks Board of Adjustments.

The Planning and Zoning Department said that north of 32nd Ave South sees more issues due to older and undersized storm water infrastructure.
