(KNOX) – For the first time since 1994, a B-1B bomber touched down Tuesday on the Grand Forks Air Force Base runway.
Lt. Col. Nate Butler, director of the commander’s action wing at Ellsworth Air Base in South Dakota, said the B-1B support group tested the Grand Forks Air Force Base underground refueling system, which Lt. Col. Butler told KNOX “worked out beautifully. It was a highly successful test.”
Grand Forks Air Force Base is a leading contender for every aircraft from Ellsworth to be relocated to while their runway is torn up in preparation for the B-21.

Senator John Hoeven says the base is set to begin housing 17 of the aircraft starting next year, and this week’s visit ensures the bomb wing can be adequately accommodated during the temporary relocation.
