(KNOX) – Woodland Resort, a family-owned business located on the shores of Devils Lake, broke ground today on a new events center made possible by a matching grant from the Governor’s Office and the North Dakota Department of Commerce. The Destination Development grant aims to create new attractions, expand existing ones, and boost the tourism economy across the state.

The Shores Events Center, situated at Woodland Resort and overlooking the picturesque Creel Bay, will be a significant addition to North Dakota’s thriving tourism industry. The resort, owned by Kyle and Karin Blanchfield, has been a labor of love for the couple for over three decades. Starting with humble cabins, the resort has grown into a full-service facility, offering cabins, a motel, and a hotel. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a full-service marina, guide services, and a store on-site.

“Woodland Resort is a North Dakota landmark with a variety of activities for residents and visitors alike. Outdoor recreation is woven into the cultural fabric of our state, whether it’s hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, horseback riding, skiing or off-roading,” said North Dakota Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller. “The incredible demand for the Destination Development grant has sent a message that North Dakota communities are eager to create attractions that differentiate and help attract and retain residents. We all see the value and return-on-investment that tourism brings as it diversifies the economy.”

The $25 million grant, which was announced by the Governor’s Office and the North Dakota Department of Commerce in November, has been instrumental in supporting the growth of North Dakota’s tourism industry. The grant program will also support projects that enhance winter sports across the state, support attractions that will enhance tribal tourism. and develop key amenities that will attract visitors and potential workforce to the state. Woodlands Resort received $1.75 million in funding. Consolidated Construction is proud to be the building contractor for this expansion.

“We are thrilled to break ground on the Shores Events Center and bring even more opportunities for visitors to experience the beauty of Devils Lake,” said Kyle Blanchfield, the third-generation owner of Woodland Resort. “This grant will not only benefit our business but also the entire community, as it will attract more tourists and provide a boost to the local economy.”

Consolidated Construction Company will design and build this project. The event center is planned to be 13,000 square feet. “We are thankful to be selected to design and build this project,” said Curtis Schroeder, Senior VP of Architecture & Design at Consolidated Construction. “We are especially thankful to have the opportunity to work with such amazing people like Karin and Kyle once again,” Schroeder continued.

The Shores Events Center is expected to be completed within the next year and will provide a versatile space for weddings, conferences, and other special events. With its stunning location and state-of-the-art facilities, the center is poised to become a premier destination for gatherings in the region.
