(KNOX) -The Grand Forks Committee of the Whole voted to keep the Grand Forks Parks District separate from the city.

A supporter of the measure is member Ken Vein.

“I myself am appreciative of the existing structure, and the park district being its own political subdivision compared to the city,” Vein said at a recent Committee of the Whole meeting.

Grand City Attorney Dan Gaustad explained to the Committee of the Whole the process of bringing the park district into the city’s fold.

“In order to dissolve a park district that has been established that we have in the City of Grand Forks, either the park district board members have to pass a resolution that would incorporate a plan of disillusion, or it has to be by petition of at least 25 percent of the qualified electors in the park district election,” Gaustad said.

Vein made the motion at the meeting to continue the Grand Forks Park District separate from the city.

“That we continue the structure as we know it today. At the same time doing as we always do, look for opportunities to share.”

The proposal will go before the full Grand Forks City Council on Monday, August 19.
