Worldwide computer outage affects airline travel

(KNOX) – A global computer glitch apparently triggered by software caused widespread global outages late Thursday and into Friday morning.
The problem affected airline communications, causing the Federal Aviation Administration to ground major carriers in the U.S., including American Airlines, Delta and United Airlines.
Grand Forks Airport executive director Ryan Riesinger said the 5 a.m. departure was delayed until 6:20 a.m., and the Delta Airlines arrival into Grand Forks is delayed a couple of hours.
There are no Allegiant flights out of Grand Forks today… but Riesinger says the Allegiant website is offline…and the Delta app is having difficulties. Allegiant cancelled both flights out of Hector Airport.
As of 7:15 a.m., Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was reporting more than 110 delayed or canceled flights amid the global internet outage. Airport officials were advising anyone with flight plans on Friday morning to check with their airline.
Airports in Japan and Australia, 911 phone lines in Alaska, and the London Stock Exchange and hospitals in England were all dealing with major disruptions.
Entire companies including the Minnesota Department of Revenue, are reporting being offline, and merchants can’t process payments in some cities.
