Beware of potato wart

By Jim Johnson Jul 17, 2024 | 2:57 PM

(KNOX) – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer is expressing concerns about the potential for potato wart to spread from potato imports from Prince Edward Isle in Canada to U.S. farms and production facilities.
Potato wart is a highly destructive disease that can reduce crop yields and make potatoes unmarketable domestically and internationally. There is no treatment available to eliminate the disease from contaminated farmland, where it can persist in the soil for decades.
In a letter to the USDA, Cramer valued North Dakota’s potato crop at more than two billion dollars.
U.S. Senator John Hoeven also signed the letter.
