Former ND priest removed

By Doug Barrett Mar 9, 2024 | 11:24 AM

A former priest of the Diocese of Fargo has been removed from his duties.  The laicization from Pope Francis is effective March 8th.

The move means Neil Pfeifer has been returned to the lay state and may no longer celebrate Mass…hear confessions…or administer sacraments.  It does not invalidate sacraments that he previously administered.

In July of last year Pfeifer pleaded guilty in Jamestown to misdemeanor sexual assault.  He was charged with a similar crime in Logan County but the case was dismissed in April.

He was an Associate Pastor at St. Michael’s Church in Grand Forks from 2011 to 2014.

Statement from the Most Reverend John Folda, Bishop of the Diocese of Fargo:

When members of the clergy or others representing the Church abuse someone, they violate a sacred trust. Please join me in praying for healing for all those hurt in this situation.”
The Diocese of Fargo is steadfast in its commitment to provide safe-environments. If you or someone you know has been sexually abused by a church worker, please report it to the proper authorities. The Diocese of Fargo’s Victim Assistance Coordinator is available at 701.356.7965.
