MN panel reviews insurance coverage for abortions

By Doug Barrett Mar 7, 2024 | 8:41 AM

A bill to mandate abortion coverage by health care plans in Minnesota has cleared a House panel.

Current law provides health insurance companies the option to include elective induced abortions. That option would disappear and abortion coverage would be required without added costs to patients through co-insurance…cost-sharing…or deductibles.

Sarah Traxler of Planned Parenthood says insurance coverage would improve health disparities.

Cathy Blaeser — co-executive director of Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life – says the bill would put people in an untenable position.  “This would force people to, in effect, pay for the killing of unborn children through their health insurance premiums.”

On a split-voice vote The House Commerce Finance and Policy Committee sent HF 4053 to the House Health Finance and Policy Committee.
