Grand Forks will soon begin the task of replacing some 11,500 residential water meters.
The city council this week approved the project and contract with Winwater at a cost of $4.2 million dollars.
The current mechanical meters were installed back in the late 1990’s and have a life span of 15 to 20 years. They are currently equipped with a transmitter that has to be read by a drive-by collector.
Water Operations Manager Dan Hanson says the new system meets current industry standards. “As they age they get less and less accurate and to our detriment.”
Hanson says the new meters use ultrasonic measuring technology to collect water usage data. “It uses technology to gather water usage without moving parts that can wear out. It has a 20 year warranty.”
Funding for the project will be spread over the 2024 and 2025 budgets.
