EGF considering special deer hunt

The East Grand Forks council may take another look at establishing a special bow hunt to help reduce the number of deer in the Greenway.

Over the years the city has received numerous complaints from residents about the animals eating shrubs and gardens and causing accidents when they run into the road.

The council has reviewed the issue of a special hunt in the past but stopped short over concerns about a 100 yard restriction from residential homes. A further review of the statutes suggests that restriction is only for discharging firearms.

Police Chief Mike Hedlund says his department fields calls every year about the deer.  “Calls for service in 2023…we had 13 deer related calls and five look like they were crashes.”

The council directed staff to gather more information about the possibility of a special hunt.
