The East Grand Forks council authorized staff last night (Tuesday) to formally request a federal planning grant for a south end bridge project.
Bridge consultant S-R-F will submit the application for the RAISE grant. Merrifield Road is the likely target location. The $28,404 cost is being split between Grand Forks…East Grand Forks…Polk County and Grand Forks County.
East Grand Forks Mayor Steve Gander calls it a good move that keeps the bridge conversation moving forward. “Merrifield is a huge win all in itself because we have been talking about bridges in our south region for a very long time.’
Council member Clarence Vetter predicts the planning process will yield some unexpected results. “I think the study will show that Merrifield Road is not a viable option. That bridge should go a mile south of there. Therefore the inter-city bridge will likely be built before Merrifield.”
Around $75 million dollars has been set aside for planning grants under the National Infrastructure Investment Program.
