UND getting close to returning tribal artifacts

By Doug Barrett Jan 29, 2024 | 8:14 AM

The University of North Dakota expects to start sending Native American artifacts and remains to tribal nations….soon.

President Andrew Armacost updated the campus community on the repatriation efforts during a recent Town Hall meeting. Armacost says he wishes things could move along faster – but it’s a painstaking process that has to be done with patience and respect.  “We do know that probably in the next couple of months we will have firm plans for repatriation.  We published 49 notices in the federal register…these are public.  They indicate we have cultural artifacts on campus that tribal nations need to be aware of.”

UND first announced in August of 2022 that the remains of ancestral Native Americans and sacred objects were discovered on campus.

Additional remains were found in the fall prompting Medical School Dean Dr. Joshua Wynne to issue a statement that UND will no longer use human remains in education — unless they have been donated to the school for that purpose.
