GF Public Health could relocate near city hall

Grand Forks Public Health may be on the move. A plan is in the works that would relocate the department into the Franklin on 4th building now under construction across from city hall.

The city/county health department currently occupies over 10,000 square feet of space on the third floor of the County Office Building. As part of a master plan review the city is also looking to expand the police department into space now occupied by the sheriff’s department. The GFSO resides on the second floor of the P-D building.

City Administrator Todd Feland says it could be a win-win for both the city and county.  “So we can start looking in 2024 to move forward in 2025-26 for the Police Department to move into the 2nd floor for additional space.  With all the moves it would be the lowest cost alternative that we can come up with.  It also frees up space for the county.”

County officials say the idea falls within a space assessment currently being conducted.

The cost of moving the health department is estimated at around $1.5 million dollars. A 20 year lease would cost some $20 dollars a square foot – with escalators built into the agreement after year six.

The city council gave the administration the green light to continue to work on the agreement.
