GF Council: Water Plant & Coulee

By Doug Barrett Jan 3, 2024 | 9:01 AM

One of the longest topics of talk at last night’s (Tuesday) relatively short council meeting involved the bids for chemicals used by the Grand Forks Water Treatment Plant.

Council member Becky Osowski questioned the amount of “stuff” being added to the water system before it comes out of the tap. Before making a motion to approve the bids Osowski cited health concerns in the process to treat…soften…stabilize… disinfect…and add fluoride to the city’s water system.  “I don’t think anybody should be drinking our tap water or anybody else’s tap water for that matter.”

Council member Ken Vien says he has the upmost faith in the quality of the water being delivered to residents.  “I think it’s safer than anything you can get that’s bottled.”

The council approved the bids unanimously.

A stretch of the English Coulee in Grand Forks is slated to be dredged. The Grand Forks council approved plans and specs to clean the coulee of sediment…silt…and vegetation that has settled in the waterway between 17th Avenue South and 32nd Avenue South. The goal is to clear the channel for long term use and add more hydraulic capacity to the diversion. The estimated cost of the project is some $339,000 dollars.
