MN DNR Issues New Ice Safety Warning

By Doug Barrett Dec 29, 2023 | 9:27 AM

Another rescue has Minnesota safety officials issuing warnings about ice conditions on lakes and streams around the state. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says few areas have ice thickness necessary for structures and vehicles.

Minnesota DNR’s Ice Safety Coordinator Nicole Biagi says conditions across the state have changed markedly in recent days.  “When people do go out they need to look at the ice thickness.  Not only measure it but check to see if it’s clear or white.  If it’s white double the ice thickness recommendation.”

On Thursday the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Department was notified that two men on an all-terrain vehicle fell through the ice on the Upper Red Lake. Despite being wet and cold there were no injuries.

The Lake of the Woods Sheriff’s Department reports a vehicle went through the ice at the Northwest Angle yesterday (Thursday) killing one person. The body was recovered seven hours later in approximately ten feet of water.

The DNR says when it comes to ice conditions – the calendar doesn’t matter.
