The East Grand Forks council approved a 2024 budget last night (Tuesday) that includes a 5% tax levy increase next year. That’s down from an earlier estimate of 11% to balance next year’s books.
The $13.5 million dollar spending plan will eat away at the budget reserves to the tune of $174,000 dollars. The city hopes to reduce that figure with cash carry-over funds from the 2023 budget. The budget plan would leave the fund balance at around 49% – well within the state recommendation of 35 to 50 percent.
Finance Director Karla Anderson says hopefully the city won’t have to go through the same struggles next year. “We did dig deep. We kind of know where we want to go in 2025.”
Council member Clarence Vetter urged staff to keep a close watch on 2024 spending. “2025 is going to be just as bad as 2024 meaning to balance the budget we are going to have to look at staffing levels again.”
With approval of the budget the council won’t meet again until January.
