GFPD warns public of OD cases

By Doug Barrett Nov 30, 2023 | 1:34 PM

Grand Forks police say they are concerned about a recent jump in narcotic related drug overdoses in recent weeks.  Authorities say they have responded to eight O-D’s in the past 17 days.

Police Lt. Andy Stein says several of the subjects have required immediate medical intervention.  “We’ve seen some of the M30 type pills with fentanyl…traditional heroine…anything that would fall in the opioid round.”

In 2021 the GFPD responded to 71 overdose calls resulting in 11 fatalities.  That number dropped to 38 and eight last year.  Lt. Stein says even with the latest bump the numbers are trending down.  “For 2023 year to date we’ve had 24 reported overdoses.”

All officers and patrol vehicles on the streets are equipped with naloxone – a medicine that reverses an opioid overdose.

Grand Forks Opioid Response Coordinator Michael Dulitz says first responders and bystanders have deployed naloxone 10 times during the recent uptick in case counts.
