A former NDSU defensive lineman who played this season for Minnesota-Duluth has died of a genetic heart condition.

Twenty-two-year-old senior Reed Ryan — originally from Waunakee, Wisconsin – died Tuesday at a Duluth hospital.

According to his obituary, Ryan went into cardiac arrest one week earlier, after a football team workout in the weight room. Until then, no one knew about his heart condition.

The obituary said Ryan was “doing what he loved” and had “lived life to the fullest in his short years.”

Ryan played eight games in a reserve role for NDSU in 2021 and 2022.
