East Grand Forks is poised to throw its support behind a legislative request by American Crystal Sugar that would allow larger twin trailer trucks on designated streets.
The proposed bill would allow twin 27 foot trailers on U.S. Highway 2…5th Avenue NE…and Business Highway 2 on a two-year trial basis.
American Crystal says three of the trucks are already in use in North Dakota and the 122,000 pound vehicles actually disperse weight better because they have more axles.
Mayor Steve Gander says he supports the plan. “Less tons per axle in this scenario vs the standard truck…better breaking so the distances are shorter…cleaning turning radius. They have put my concerns to bed as to the safety of what they are proposing here.”
It’s estimated the new trailer design would reduce truck trips into and out of the East Grand Forks plant by 30%.
