The Mayo Clinic has announced a $5 billion expansion plan that officials say includes new buildings designed so the clinic can evolve and expand as patient needs change over the coming decades.
The project is part of a strategy to transform both patient care and its flagship campus in Rochester, Minnesota.
Officials say a key part of the plan is the creation of “neighborhoods” within the new facilities… organized around particular conditions.
The C-E-O of Mayo, Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, says the idea is to blur the traditional lines between inpatient and outpatient care.
Two new clinical buildings will be built at the center of campus. Each will have nine floors but they’ll be as tall as a 16-story building, and they’ll be designed so that more floors could be added in the future.
Mayo, an independent nonprofit, is funding the project with its own revenue sources as part of its long-term plans and will not ask for government money, Farrugia said. Most construction will begin in early 2024.
