BCI computer forensic expert to testify during Holmberg trial

By Pat Sweeney Nov 3, 2023 | 5:01 PM

Court documents say federal prosecutors intend to call a forensic computer expert with the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation during the trial of former state Sen. Ray Holmberg of Grand Forks.

Holmberg was accused in federal court this week of traveling to Prague between 2011 and 2016 to engage in commercial sex acts with a minor.

According to documents filed by federal prosecutors today (Fri), search warrants were used to examine a state-owned laptop computer labeled “Property of Legislative Assembly” and three email accounts, including Holmberg’s state government-issued account.

The expert will testify about his knowledge concerning commonly-used search terms by child porn offenders, names of files, and other relative matters.

He will also testify that the number of child porn images recovered on Holmberg’s devices “indicate an intention to possess such material.”

Holmberg has pleaded not guilty to two federal charges. A trial date is set for Dec. 5.
