Former UND forward Shane Pinto of the Ottawa Senators has been suspended 41 games by the NHL for “activities relating to sports wagering.”
The League’s investigation found no evidence that the 22-year-old New York native made any wagers on NHL games.
An Ottawa newspaper reports that Pinto had an online gambling account in the U.S. that was identified by an NHL partner “because of unusual activity.”
A statement from the Senators says Pinto is an “intelligent young man who made poor decisions… We know he is remorseful for his mistakes.”
Pinto issued a statement, apologizing to the NHL, the Senators, his teammates, the fans and city of Ottawa, and his family. He says he takes full responsibility for his actions.
Ottawa Coach D.J. Smith said Pinto would be welcomed back when eligible to return.
Pinto is unsigned and can be back at the midway point of the season.
Pinto played at UND from 2019 to 2021.
