NDUS reviews Tik Tok recruitement request

By Doug Barrett Oct 26, 2023 | 12:36 PM

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education stopped short today (Thursday) of approving a plan to allow individual campuses to use “Tik Tok” as a recruiting tool.

In March the NDUS Board banned the social media app from university owned devices.  Many government agencies have adopted similar rules citing national security concerns over Tik Tok’s ownership by a Chinese company.

Vice-Chancellor Darin King told the board there is a work-around so not to violate board policy by using a virtual keyboard and cloud computing,

Board member Kevin Black says he trusts the leadership of the college presidents to do the right thing – but he still has concerns.  “Given everything going on in the world and our continued escalation with China is Tik Tok the right way to reach students.”

The board voted 8-0 to send the issue back to the Research and Governance Committee for further discussion.
