North Dakota transportation officials hope to improve highway safety on I-29 by making the corridor “smart.”
The DOT is considering a series of technology enhancements along the interstate system stretching from the Canadian border to the South Dakota line. Those things include: variable speed limits…ramp metering to reduce the rate vehicles enter the system…bridge de-icing sensors…electronic alternative routing signage…virtual weigh stations…and electronic road closure gates.
The DOT’s Brandon Beise says no decisions have been made. “It’s still just a planning phase. We don’t have any funding or deadline timelines.”
Beise says much of the technology already exists. “Solutions being presented are being used across the country…maybe just not in North Dakota just yet.”
The DOT says crash rates on I-29 are 30% higher than the statewide average.
