The Grand Forks council has approved a billboard moratorium until a formal review of the city’s sign code is completed.
Grand Forks currently has a cap on the number of billboards allowed in the city based on a population formula. That cap is currently set at 112.
City Attorney Dan Gaustad says it will take some time to go through the fine-print of the code that’s nearly 20 pages long. “I don’t have a date certain but I don’t expect it to be a year…or years…to get this done.”Gaustad says the city may want to hire a consultant to add a second pair of eyes to the process.
Council President Dana Sande says ultimately the city should decide where billboards go. Mayor Brandon Bochenski says rather than trying to rewrite the current code it might be better to start over and craft a code based on today’s standards and needs.
The city currently has two billboard requests pending.
