Minnesota hockey icon and Warroad native Henry Boucha has died at the age of 72. His daughter Tara says Boucha died on Monday.
After a stellar high school career, Boucha helped the 1972 U-S Olympic team win a silver medal in Japan.
The Ojibwe Native American then played six seasons as a pro. But his career was derailed in a 1975 game with the North Stars. Boston’s Dave Forbes jammed the butt-end of his stick near Boucha’s right eye, causing a severe injury.
Forbes got a 10-game suspension, and was prosecuted in Hennepin County for aggravated assault, but the case ended in a hung jury. Years later, Boucha said he forgave Forbes for the incident.
Boucha played in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota North Stars, Kansas City Scouts and Colorado Rockies. He played one season in the World Hockey Association with the Minnesota Fighting Saints.
Tara Boucha says her father’s funeral will be held in Warroad. Arrangements are pending.
