ND election petition submitted for circulation

A second petition looking to make changes in North Dakota’s election and petition process has been filed with Secretary of State Michael Howe.

The petition would require that all ballots be counted by hand and prohibits the use of electronic counting devices. In addition early voting would not be allowed.
The measure would also require a two-thirds supermajority of the legislature to place an amendment on the ballot.

The sponsoring committee filed a similar petition in August only to pull it days later.

The Secretary of State and Attorney General have five to seven business days to draft a petition title. The group behind the measure would need 31,164 valid signatures to put the measure on the ballot. The signatures need to be obtained within one year of circulation.
