The Grand Forks council has agreed to advance not one…but two…designs for a 42nd Street underpass to the North Dakota Department of Transportation for further review.
In addition to the so-called B-1 design given preliminary approval last week the council has added a C-1 alternative into the mix.
The B-1 includes a tee intersection on DeMers Avenue with a jug handle connection to south 42nd. Although the design would impact the golf course it would allow access to an existing gas station.
The C-1 project would result in a fully sunken intersection – but keep existing arterial streets pretty much as is.
Council member Ken Vien says what is best for the traveling public should take precedent over land acquisition.
With inflation the actual cost of the two builds ranges from $58 to $69 million dollars. Actual construction would take place prior to 2029.
