UND’s repatriation efforts continue

Repatriation efforts of Native American bones and artifacts continues at the University of North Dakota.

It was one year ago that UND officials announced the discovery of ancestral remains on campus. Under federal law the items must be returned to their appropriate tribal homes.

During a UND town hall meeting this week Laine Lyons of the Native American Compliance Committee says it’s been a slow – but needed – process to date.  “It’s been a lot of work…it’s complicated work.   We will have an update to the website in the next few weeks.  I won’t give you an exact update as it’s confidential information I cannot share…but we remain committed to this.”

In May UND hired Mary Baker as a compliance liaison officer to assist with repatriation efforts.
