Minnesota Republicans are urging Governor Tim Walz to call a special session to deal with a provision in law that has resulted in numerous law enforcement agencies to suspend School Resource Officer programs.
The law prohibits SRO’s from using bodily prone restraints and certain physical holds on students in non-emergency situations.
House Minority Leader Lisa Damuth says the SRO programs work.
Senator Zach Duckworth (R- Lakeville) says the goal is to a simple repeal of the law passed this spring. “I think what happened…and it might have been an honest mistake…I don’t know. It didn’t go through the appropriate process that would have vetted it and caught this to head off and correct before it became law.”
Demuth and Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson of East Grand Forks made the formal request for a special session in a letter to the governor dated Wednesday.
