Burgum attends GOP debate despite injury

By Doug Barrett Aug 24, 2023 | 9:30 AM

The first 2024 Republican presidential debate is in the books.

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum was on stage standing on one leg behind the podium. His participation was in doubt after an injury the night before (Tuesday).
Burgum told reporters in Milwaukee that he ended up rupturing his Achilles tendon – despite initially thinking it might have only been a tear.

Burgum addressed his injury during his opening comments on stage.  “I’m from a town of 300 people and it’s a big deal to make it on this stage with all these folks.  When they were wishing me well I think I took it too literally when they said go to Milwaukee and break a leg.”

Burgum hurt his leg playing basketball on Tuesday and said he saw a Milwaukee Bucks doctor on Wednesday.
