Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has promoted Natalie Hudson to chief justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Hudson will be the first Black to be chief justice. She has served on the High Court since 2015.

Hudson will succeed Lori Gildea, who is retiring in October. Gildea is a native of Plummer (MN) who has spent 17 years on the High Court — the last 13 as chief justice.

Walz also appointed his former general counsel, Karl Procaccini to fill Hudson’s spot as associate justice.

Procaccini was previously the top lawyer in the governor’s office.
