GF council reviews 47th Interchange

The Grand Forks council gave the green light last night (Monday) to preliminary plans for a proposed I-29 Interchange at 47th Avenue South.

A staff report puts the selected project in excess of $53 million dollars – the cheapest of several alternatives on the table. Assistant City Engineer David Kuharenko says right now the North Dakota DOT has not allocated any funding for the project so the earliest construction would begin is 2029 – or later.  “We still have to construct all the local connecting roadways.”

One of the goals of the interchange is to lessen traffic congestion on 32nd Avenue South. City Engineer Al Grasser says once the 47th interchange is on the books it might help move the reconstruction 32nd forward as well.  “It would be my hope that we can all decide that four lanes on 32nd moving into the future is going to be sufficient.”

The city previously entered into an engineering agreement with the state for development of the interchange on a 50-50 cost share.
