A 20-year old Red Lake (MN) man has been sentenced to 33 months in jail for the shotgun beating of a female victim.
The U.S. Attorney’s office says Devin Sumner and the victim had been involved in a relationship. In March of 2020 Sumner became angry with the woman and began to physically assault the victim. Authorities say during the assault he grabbed a shotgun and repeated hit the victim on the hands and body. TAs a result the female suffered a broken hand and multiple lacerations that required surgery.
In handing down the sentence, Chief Judge Patrick J. Schiltz emphasized the need to deter the “epidemic of violence against Native American women, both on and off the reservation.”
